What makes a luxury watch so special? We go through the different parts, step by step, to explain exactly what it is that distinguishes the most exclusive watches from the normal watches.

This distinguishes a luxury watch

The clockwork

In many ways, this is really the heart of the most exclusive watches. Most expensive watches have amazing movements. Some, are market leaders and drive the development of watch movement complications forward. Almost all movements in today’s exclusive watches are of very high quality, although some take quality control to an almost ridiculous level.

Crystal

The actual glass (or plastic) that surrounds the watch. There are many crystal types on the market, from scratch-resistant and impact-resistant to specially developed and unique crystals that only the specific watch brand is allowed to use.

The construction

When you buy expensive watches, you naturally want everything to be perfect. After all, it is a big expense for the vast majority. When it comes to watches from the most exclusive watchmakers, the level of construction is very high. All companies set high limits for what is accepted, but again it is worth mentioning that some companies rise even above the elite in the watch world.

Rolex , Omega, Cartier and Hublot are some examples of brands that belong to the upper luxury limit. Then there are watch brands whose extreme ambitions and pursuit of perfection are remarkable, both in quality and price.A. Lange & Söhne, Audemars Piguet and Vacheron Constantin. Amazingly, there is yet another category. Here we are talking about unique works of art, specially designed and handcrafted by the true masters of horology. The watchmakers Philippe Dufour and François-Paul Journe belong to this very exclusive crowd.

Finish

The subsequent details that really distinguish more common watches from more exclusive watches. It is about the polishing of the case and the special patterns that are brushed into the movement. Many more luxurious watches from the Geneva region use the Côte de Genève, a striped pattern that serves only an aesthetic function. Even the dial usually gets a special finish, for example a checkered tapestry (See Audemars Piguet Royal Oak).

The bracelet

There is a difference between bracelets and bracelets. When you buy a luxury watch, you can count on the bracelet being made of high-quality materials, regardless of whether you choose a metal or leather bracelet. To use the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak again, integrated links were used, specially developed for the specific watch case and not interchangeable with other bracelets.

Material

It is not uncommon to find exclusive materials in luxury watches, from gold and silver to titanium and platinum. Some brands take that step further by, for example, creating a dial from springs, ceramic carbon composites, cigar leaves and in-house developed materials such as Hublot’s Texalium.

The brand’s signature

The power of the brand is worth mentioning all on its own. In many cases, it is the brand that determines whether you buy a watch or not. There are several companies that develop luxury watches and although both the prices and quality control may differ, some are more famous than others. Rolex is a good example, a brand that the vast majority of people both know and associate with luxury. If you compared a Cartier watch to a Rolex watch, Rolex would probably be the watch brand most people know. The price of a Cartier watch is comparable to the price of a Rolex, at least for most of the company’s watch models.

Design

Again, a factor that affects both the company’s brand and also the function itself. In terms of design, they differ a lot between a diver’s watch from Rolex and a racing watch from Omega. Both have a design that most watch enthusiasts would be familiar with, as does a Cartier Tank and an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak.

Certification

For almost all watch manufacturers, certification is a must, more specifically a precision certification from the Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres (COSC). A movement certified by COSC maintains a very high precision while being insensitive to various influencing factors.
