History of Cartier
Louis-François Cartier started his jewellery firm in 1847 in Paris after inheriting a workshop studio. In his workshop, he began to design exclusive jewellery for the truly rich. Cartier quickly became known for his beautiful, quality jewellery, and soon there were a number of Cartier boutiques throughout Paris. His clients were kings, queens, maharajas and Hollywood stars, and Louis-François was called “the royal jeweller”.
With a background as a jeweller, Cartier began to produce watches, and for over the last 100 years, the company’s origins have made their mark on watch design. Gemstones and exclusively selected materials are one of the foundations of Cartier’s many designs. Cartier’s clockwork has been produced by many different suppliers, including Audemars Piguet, Jaeger leCoultre and Vacheron Constantin— all with very high quality and unbelievable workmanship that has attracted enthusiasts and collectors for generations.
Trendsetting Classic Models
One of the many models designed by Cartier is The Santos. This model was designed in 1904 for pilots, since a pocket watch was not very practical during flight. The square dial is distinctive for The Santos, and even though it has been updated many times over the years, the timeless design remains.
The Tank is probably the most well-known watch produced by Cartier. This model was launched in 1917, in the middle of World War I.The design is inspired by how a tank looks from above. Just like with The Santos, it has gone through many different updates and models, all true to the original form.
The Pasha, with its round dial, is another classic from Cartier. The name comes from the Middle East, and is another name for a high-ranking person. In fact, in 1933, it was the Pasha of Marrakesh who requested a Cartier watch to wear for his swimming trips. The Pasha model family has expanded since 1933, and exists now both in men’s and women’s models, with classic performance and in bolder designs.
